HUSH (2016)
Hush is a good movie to start with, as it is not a supernatural movie but more realistic. Hush is a home invasion story, with themes of isolation, murder and just straight up terror. It is easier for the audience to relate to because this situation can happen to any unlucky person. Warning to those who want to watch this movie; it can get very graphic and bloody and has multiple scenes with dead characters, spraying blood and bodily harm.
This movie revolves around a deaf writer named Maddie Young who recently moved to the middle of
nowhere after a breakup. Due to this move she has very limied contact with others except some
neighbors, who also live in the forested area a good distance away. Unfortunately, a sadist killer finds
Maddie and discovers she is deaf. This kicks off a tortuous night where Maddie has to fight off the
intruder who has a huge advantage and can enter her home at any time. Despite the odds being
stacked against her, Maddie uses her wits and willpower to, eventually, stop the intruder in his track.
Hush is very good at immersing the audience. The movie plays with sounds, as stated before Maddie is deaf, and in multiple points in the movie there is no sound. During these moments it is as if we are experiencing what Maddie is and it adds an extra layer of tension to an already tense scene. Director Mike Flannagan Stated that he wanted to make the entire movie silent but realized a modern audience would not be too interested. Despite this we are still able to relate and empathize with Maddie through her interactions with other and amazing acted and well written characterization. Hush is a definite must watch horror movie for those interested scary and tense movies!
